Do I need an internal examination?An internal exam is the best way to assess pelvic floor function, but it’s always optional. I will fully explain the process, and you can decide what feels right for you.

What is pelvic health physiotherapy, and how can it help me?Pelvic health physiotherapy focuses on treating issues related to the pelvic floor, such as pain, incontinence, prolapse, and postnatal recovery. It helps strengthen and restore function, improving comfort and confidence in daily life.

Do I need a referral to see a pelvic health physiotherapist?No, you can book directly without a referral. However, if you have a complex medical history, it may be helpful to consult your GP or consultant first.

What should I expect at my first appointment?Your first session includes a detailed assessment of your symptoms, medical history, and goals. If needed, a pelvic floor examination may be offered, but only with your consent. Together, we’ll create a personalised treatment plan.

Is pelvic health physiotherapy safe during pregnancy?Yes! It’s completely safe and can help with pelvic girdle pain, back pain, and preparing your pelvic floor for birth.

Can you help with pelvic girdle pain (PGP)?Absolutely! Physiotherapy can reduce pain, improve mobility, and provide strategies to make daily activities easier.

How can I prepare my pelvic floor for birth?I offer guidance on perineal massage, breathing techniques, and exercises to help your pelvic floor adapt to labour and recovery.

When can I start pelvic health physiotherapy after giving birth?You can book an appointment as soon as you feel ready. Internal pelvic floor examinations can only be carried out after 6 weeks of giving birth. However, if you have loads of questions during the initial 6 weeks, you can always book a virtual appointment.

What is a Mummy MOT, and do I need one?A Mummy MOT is a specialist postnatal assessment checking your pelvic floor, abdominal muscles (for diastasis recti), and overall recovery after birth. It’s ideal for all mums, whether you have symptoms or just want reassurance. For more details about what a Mummy MOT entails click here for our service page.

I still have a ‘mum tum’—could it be diastasis recti?It’s possible! A physiotherapy assessment can check for abdominal separation and guide you on safe, effective exercises to help restore function.
